The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) would like to make the public aware of an ongoing scam that is using the Publishers Clearing House name and letterhead. This scam involves a letter being received telling the person they have won a large cash prize from
The person receiving the letter and the check are told to call a toll free number and speak with a Company Representative. The “representative” then tells the person to deposit the check to cover “any outstanding fees that has not been paid by
The check and the letter are both complete fakes, according to LCSO. After a person sends out the money orders, their bank will notify them that the check is no good. The person depositing the check is the person who will be held responsible for replacing any money that was used from the account.
The LCSO advises the public to never accept a check from someone one does not know, especially if that person asked one to cash the check and send them or someone else some or all of the money from the check. This is just a new twist on an old con game.
Do not trust the telephone numbers printed on the letters or the checks. Call information or check the internet for the correct number of the company represented on the letter or the bank the check was drawn on.
