Waldoboro Police and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Tasered and arrested a man who was reportedly threatening police officers at his home on Washington Road in Waldoboro on May 25, said Lt. Rand Maker with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
At around 9:15 p.m. police responded to a call from a woman who said she had locked the man, Steven Fuller, out of their house at 1916 Washington Rd. because he was drunk, had a knife and was making threatening comments.
When police arrived, Fuller had a knife with a 12-inch blade and approached a Waldoboro officer and threatened him, Maker said. A Sheriff’s Deputy deployed his Taser and Fuller was restrained.
Fuller was transported to Miles Memorial Hospital for mental health evaluation following the confrontation, Maker said. Waldoboro Police arrested Fuller and charged him with criminal threatening with a deadly weapon, said officials at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.
Fuller is currently being held on $1,000 bail.
“The deputy deployed his Taser successfully and no one was hurt,” Maker said. “This is exactly why we carry them.”
The LCSO got all new Tasers [acronym for Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle] in July 2010 and retrained all of their deputies, Maker said. This is the first time one has been used since that training, Maker said.
“Going 10 months without a single deployment [of a Taser] shows restraint,” Maker said. “Clearly deadly force could have been used in this instance. This shows that the training works and our guys aren’t out there lighting everybody up.”
Waldoboro Police do not carry Tasers. “I’m sure they were glad we were there,” Maker said.
