Pemaquid Watershed Association’s annual meeting on Wednesday, July 17, at Lakehurst Lodge in Damariscotta will feature a talk by Maine Audubon biologist Susan Gallo, “The Challenges of Parenthood: How Where and Why Nesting Common Loons Succeed (or Fail) in Maine.”
This multi-media slide show walks through a year of a loon parent’s life, asking along the way what makes an individual succeed (or fail) in his or her quest to raise young.
Filled with amazing photos, video, and sounds, the show highlights the benefits to loons who choose to live in Maine, as well as the many threats they face, especially from lead fishing tackle, which has been documented as the leading source of adult loon mortality over the last 25 years.
Also highlighted is a citizen-science initiative to engage volunteers to collect information about where loons nest and how well they do. The information gathered from this effort will be used to better inform management decisions and future conservation actions.
The general public is invited to join PWA members for the traditional potluck supper followed by a business meeting that will include a presentation of awards and an overview of the past year and future plans.
Attendees are asked to arrive by 4:30 p.m. and bring a dinner item to share so that the dinner can begin promptly at 5 p.m.
The loon talk starts immediately after the business meeting.
To reach Lakehurst Lodge, take Biscay Road two miles to Egypt Road. Turn left onto Egypt Road and travel 1.5 miles. Turn right onto Lakehurst Lane.
