Law enforcement and emergency crews were called to a Wiscasset residence on Gardiner Road for an accidental gunshot wound close to 2:30 a.m., Jan. 8. At the scene responders found Daniel Reed, 49, conscious and alert.
According to Wiscasset Police Sgt. Kathy Williams, Reed was checking out his .22 caliber handgun when it accidentally discharged. The bullet struck him in the abdominal area, Williams said.
Reed was transported by LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. At press time he was listed in fair condition.
Williams applauded the efforts of the Wiscasset Ambulance Service and the Wiscasset Fire Department for their support, and the highway crew for preparing the LifeFlight landing site at Wiscasset High School.
