During a brief but violent thunderstorm in the morning on June 1, lightning struck the home of Jefferson Firefighter Ken Foster and his wife Susan Foster.
The strike started a fire in the basement. Susan Foster was home and reported the fire at 10:03 a.m.; Jefferson firefighters were on the scene at 10:08 a.m., Jefferson Fire Chief Walter Morris said.
“She was able to keep it contained with water until we got there,” Morris said. “Fortunately, there wasn’t a lot of fire damage.” However, the lightning strike caused some damage, and the resulting power surge destroyed the furnace, Morris said.
Fire crews from Somerville and Washington joined Jefferson at the scene, and a Windsor fire crew stood by at the Jefferson Fire Station.
The Fosters were not immediately available for comment.
