A public hearing about a Lincoln Academy proposal to build a 52-student, three-story dormitory will take place before the Newcastle Planning Board Thursday, Aug. 29.
The building would house the students in double- and triple-occupancy rooms with six two- and three-bedroom apartments for dormitory parents, architect Tor Glendinning said at a Planning Board meeting Aug. 15.
The building would stand between the track and the baseball diamond, with the front of the building visible from Academy Hill Road. The school plans to expand one side of the track as part of the project.
Wright-Ryan Construction Inc. of Portland will build the dormitory and hopes to break ground by October.
The school wants the building to have a certificate of occupancy by mid-July 2014, said Wright-Ryan Construction Director of Pre-construction Services Cordelia Pitman. The project will require at least 10 months of construction, she said.
Wright-Ryan Construction has extensive experience with major construction projects in the state, including the Bath Area Family YMCA and the University of Southern Maine Wishcamper Center.
A driveway and sidewalk to a 15-space parking area behind the building will extend off the existing driveway to the staff parking area.
The school plans to enlarge the existing driveway and add a sidewalk as part of the upcoming construction of a nearby applied technology and engineering center.
The public hearing will take place at 7 p.m. in the community room of the Newcastle fire station. The Planning Board could vote on whether to approve the project after the hearing.
