With heavy rains expected to continue through Wednesday and flood warnings in effect for coastal and low lying areas, the Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency has issued an alert intended to assist local residents planning, protecting, and preventing flood related issues in their communities and homes.
Lincoln County EMA advises residents to safeguard their possessions. Citizens are urged to create a personal “flood file” containing information about all possessions which should be kept in a secure place, such as a safe deposit box or waterproof container.
This file should have a copy of relevant insurance policies with the agent’s contact information; a room-by-room inventory of possessions, including receipts, photos, and videos and copies of all other critical documents, including finance records or receipts of major purchases.
Residents are also advised to prepare their homes by making sure any sump pump is working, clearing debris from gutters and downspouts and anchoring any fuel tanks on site.
Electrical components (switches, sockets, circuit breakers, and wiring) should be raised at least 12 inches above the home’s projected flood elevation; the furnace, water heater, washer, and dryer should be placed on cement blocks at least 12 inches above the projected flood elevation.
Move furniture, valuables, and important documents should be moved to a safe place.
Families are encouraged to develop a specific family emergency plan including a flood evacuation route and creating a safety kit with drinking water, canned food, first aid, blankets, a radio, and a flashlight.
Emergency telephone numbers should be placed by the telephone and children should be taught to dial 911.
Ask an out-of-state relative or friend to be your emergency family contact and residents are advised to have a plan to protect your pets.
