The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will permit moose hunting in much of Lincoln County during the 2011 deer hunting season.
IF&W spokesperson Andrea Erskine said the action was taken following public hearings on a petition seeking the hunt.
“The reason was because of a concern over traffic accidents involving moose,” she said.
The commission’s biologists are studying the moose herd in the area in preparation for making recommendations on the number of hunting permits to be issued for the hunt. Current plans call for moose hunting to be permitted during deer hunting season in Nov. 2011.
Current tentative plans suggest as many as 45 moose hunting permits may be issued for Wild Life District 25, which includes 550 square miles in Lincoln, Knox and Sagadahoc counties including towns of Boothbay, Damariscotta, Bristol, Waldoboro.
Tentative plans call for 22 permits to be issued in District 22, which includes 576 square miles in Kennebec, Androscoggon, Sagadahoc and Lincoln counties, including Wiscasset and Whitefield.
Erskine said commissions current plans call for permits to be allocated by spring 2011.
