Sheriff Todd Brackett told Lincoln County Commissioners during their regular meeting Tuesday Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Henry Grenier has submitted his resignation.
Grenier gave the sheriff’s department two weeks’ notice by way of a letter of resignation on March 8. Brackett said Grenier would remain on leave until the resignation becomes effective, March 22.
Grenier was placed on administrative leave with pay for a non-work related incident in Aug. 2009. The attorney general considered the case, but declined to file charges.
As required by law, Brackett then referred the case to Maine Criminal Justice Academy board, which has the authority to revoke police powers.
At its Jan. 22 meeting the Academy board voted to decertify Grenier. Grenier has 30 days to appeal that decision. Up until the resignation notice Brackett had previously stated Grenier was doing paperwork and was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office.
Commissioners accepted the resignation and agreed with Brackett to begin the search to fill the newly opened position. Brackett agreed to work with a commissioner or the county administrator in the hiring process.
Commissioner Sheridan Bond made the suggestion to have one commissioner or the county administrator sit in on the hiring process.
“I want to be sure we have a better feel for somebody you’ve selected,” Bond said to Brackett, adding the sheriff has been working with commissioners in the recent past with regards to personnel issues.
Chairman Commissioner Lynn Orne agreed with fellow members of the board participation in the interview process would be beneficial to all parties involved.
