At their May 17 meeting, the South Bristol Board of Selectmen set the 2012 mil rate at $3, 20 cents less than the previous year.
The mil rate determines the property tax paid per $1000 of assessed value.
In 2011 South Bristol boasted the lowest mil rate in Lincoln County. Towns are just beginning to calculate tax rates, but with only one other town, Southport, under $4, it’s unlikely any will best South Bristol.
The earnings from a $10 million-plus portfolio, made possible by a generous gift from the late Ann Wilder Stratton, help the town maintain the rate.
In other municipal business, the selectmen signed a letter of support for a Tidewater Telecom grant application to expand high-speed Internet access in South Bristol.
The Nobleboro company already offers high-speed DSL service throughout South Bristol. The ConnectME grant would expand the availability of significantly higher speeds to approximately 38 homes and businesses in areas including High Island, Hunters Landing Road, Prentiss Cove Road, Rt. 129 in Walpole and S Road.
