Nineteen local veterans and active duty members of the U.S. Marine Corp gathered at the Wells Hussey American Legion Post in Damariscotta on the eve of Veteran’s Day Nov. 11 to celebrated the Marine Corps 235th birthday. The Marine Corps was founded in 1775.
Active duty Marine Patrick Styles was the youngest in attendance. There were three veterans of World War II, including Muriel Wilhelm of Bristol, Ralph Eugley, Jr. of Waldoboro, and Ray Roberts of Nobleboro. There were veterans represented from the Korean and Vietnam wars and the current campaign in the Middle East.
Wilhelm, 88, the oldest Marine in attendance presented a piece of birthday cake to the youngest Marine Styles. Marines enjoyed a supper made by volunteers before cutting the birthday cake. This is the sixth consecutive year local Marines have gathered to celebrate the Corps’ birthday.
