Great Salt Bay Community School students will compete in the Maine Geographic Bee, Maine MathCounts competition and Maine State Spelling Bee during the weeks ahead.
Eighth-grader Jacob Brown will represent Great Salt Bay at MathCounts Saturday, March 16 at the Kennebec Valley Community College after a strong performance in the chapter competition, where he finished 15th in a field of 75 students.
The top 20 students in the chapter competition advance to the state and the top four in the state advance to the national competition.
Eighth-grader Christine Hilton will represent the school at the Maine State Spelling Bee Saturday, March 30 at the University of Southern Maine.
Hilton won the Lincoln County Spelling Bee Feb. 7 to earn a spot at the state contest. Brown, the MathCounts competitor, was the runner-up. The state bee champion will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Washington, D.C. area May 30.
Fifth-grader Quinn Straus will represent Great Salt Bay at the Maine Geographic Bee Friday, April 5 at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Straus won the Great Salt Bay bee in January. School bee winners take an exam and the top 100 scores earn a place at the state bee. The state champion will advance to the National Geographic Bee May 22 in Washington, D.C.
