Once again Lincoln County weathered another major winter storm with a minimum of damage – even though this time it was a history-making blizzard. There were the usual minor vehicle accidents, along with school and business closures, but no major incidents occurred during the event, according to Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency Director Tod Hartung.
“I think residents paid attention to what folks were saying about staying home and off the roads,” Hartung said. “People hunkered down and it prevented any major incidents from occurring.”
At the height of the storm there were 652 households without power in Lincoln County, with a majority of these in Boothbay Harbor and Jefferson, according to Central Maine Power. Power was restored to all residents by Saturday night, according to CMP.
In a rare circumstance, post offices were closed and mail delivery was suspended on Saturday, according to the United States Postal Service.
Newcastle weather observer Arlene Cole measured 24.5 inches of total accumulated snowfall for the blizzard, with 18 inches of that falling on Saturday. High winds and blowing snow made for uneven accumulation, and many areas were bare while others were piled high with drifts of snow.
