A teenager from southern Maine allegedly stole a book of checks from his Waldoboro grandmother in December and deposited forged checks totaling $18,800 into his own accounts in the following weeks, according to Waldoboro Police Officer Larry Hesseltine.
Cody Osgood, 19, was indicted by grand jury March 12 on class B felony counts of forgery and theft by unauthorized taking.
Court paperwork lists addresses for Osgood in Windham and Falmouth.
According to Hesseltine, Osgood visited his grandmother, Sherrill Osgood, in Waldoboro on Dec. 6 and allegedly stole a book of 30 checks from her cupboard.
“By the time grandma got her bank statement, he had cashed $18,800 worth of checks, all written out to himself. He forged and cashed, I should say,” Hesseltine said.
Osgood allegedly deposited the $18,800 – in 23 checks – into his accounts at Key Bank and TD Bank, Hesseltine said.
“The bank put a stop payment on the remaining seven, which he did cash and Falmouth [Police Department] is following up on that end of it,” Hesseltine said.
Sherrill Osgood did have to file paperwork with her bank, but is not out any money as a result of the alleged theft, Hesseltine said.
Hesseltine issued Cody Osgood a summons for class B theft on Jan. 14.
“It’s true,” Osgood said of the allegations when reached March 23. “I’ve had a rough 18 years to be honest with you, and I think that’s part of the reason why I did it. I had a couple mental breakdowns and I was abused as a kid and I think that certainly plays a part in it.”
Osgood said he was unsure of his plan regarding the charges.
Osgood’s arraignment is scheduled for April 13 at 8:30 a.m. in Lincoln County Superior Court.
