A man sustained minor injuries in a two-car accident at the intersection of Belvedere Road and Route 1 in Damariscotta the afternoon of April 22.
Robert C. Morse Jr., 66, of Waldoboro, was driving a Mercedes-Benz E-320 north on Route 1 at about 2:30 p.m. as Alton C. Newell Jr., 59, of Jefferson, was driving a Toyota Tacoma west on Belvedere Road, Damariscotta Police Officer Devin Polizzotti said.
Newell was at the stop sign on Belvedere Road, waiting to cross Route 1 to continue west on Belvedere Road. As Newell was crossing Route 1, the Mercedes-Benz struck the rear driver’s side of the Toyota.
The Toyota spun around and came to rest facing northbound in the southbound lane of Route 1. The Mercedes-Benz sustained significant front-end damage, left the roadway and came to rest in the northbound ditch.
The drivers of both vehicles were wearing seat belts and airbags deployed in both vehicles, Polizzotti said.
Morse was unhurt. Newell suffered a cut to his shoulder and complained of neck pain, Polizzotti said.
It appears Newell failed to adequately check to his left before attempting to cross Route 1, although the intersection can be dangerous and difficult to negotiate even for cautious drivers, Polizzotti said.
The Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service, the Damariscotta Fire Department, the Damariscotta Police Department, the Nobleboro Fire Department and Quick-Turn Auto Repair responded to the scene.
