A 19 year old Waldoboro man was found dead in Gross Neck in Waldoboro after he was reported missing on Saturday.
Ian Sanborn was reported missing at noon on Saturday after family members had not heard from him, according to a press release from Deborah Turcotte of the Maine Warden Service. A Marine Patrol pilot found Sanborn at 4 p.m. on Saturday in an area of Broad Cove known locally as Bug-Tussle, near where he had been clam digging with a friend.
The friend, a juvenile, told investigators he left the scene after he finished digging with Sanborn. According to Turcotte, Sanborn told his friend he wanted to rest before leaving the flats.
The pair had started digging in the area very early Friday morning, Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde said. Family members called patrolman and shellfish warden Bill Bragg on Saturday after Sanborn had not returned from digging.
The incident is under investigation by the Maine Warden Service, along with Maine State Police and Waldoboro Police. Investigators await autopsy results from the state medical examiner’s office. According to a spokesperson at the medical examiner’s office, the autopsy was conducted on Monday and is pending further study.
“There is still some additional work to do,” Maine State Police spokesperson Steve McCausland said on Monday. “At this point, there is no indication of foul play.”
