Money was allegedly stolen from the Medomak Valley boys basketball team in Portland Thursday afternoon while the team was practicimg for their state championship game Friday night against Cape Elizabeth.
Money was stolen out of the players’ locker room while the team practiced between 2-4 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena.
Medomak Coach Nick DePatsy would not elaborate on the amount stolen, but said it was a “significant amount. There were not many people in the building. The kids had some money on them and he cleaned them out.”
A suspicious person was caught on video tape according to DePatsy. “The police are involved. Hopefully they do it right and take care of it down there,” DePatsy added.
Medomak Valley Athletic Director Matt Lash said “the police are familiar” with the thief.
“It blows my mind that that would not be safe,” Lash said of the locker room.
Lash said this event should not affect the players. “They are a resilient group. They have been tested, and they remain focused on what they have to do tonight,” Lash said.
The Class B championship game tips off on at 9 p.m. Cape Elizabeth is 18-3. Medomak Valley is 19-2.
