A truck driver for the Monhegan Island Inn was rescued from the roaring surf on the east side of the island Sunday by an alert fisherman.
Braden Aldrich was one of a group of sightseers watching the boiling waves left over from Hurricane Bill when a wave crashed into them.
“There was a group that was washed over. The others managed to escape, but this guy was pulled into the sea,” said Sherm Stanley, a Monhegan lobsterman.
“Someone ran to a cottage and called 911. A young fisherman, Matt Webber, was monitoring the emergency radio frequency and he sailed over there and pulled him out,” Stanley said.
“He is a very lucky fellow. He was in the water for about 15 minutes and was pretty beat up from the rocks,” Stanley said.
Aldrich was reported back at work later in the week.
