A motorcycle rider died as a result of his injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Rt. 1 in Waldoboro shortly before 1 p.m. July 9.
According to Waldoboro Police, Francis Brewster, 71, of Waldoboro was traveling northbound in heavy traffic when he struck the back of a 1996 Ford Windstar, driven by Patricia Boyington, 38, of Waldoboro.
Boyington was stopped in traffic due to road construction. The Maine Dept. of Transportation was in the process of road surface repair and had temporarily stopped the northbound lane.
According to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde, Brewster was not traveling very fast at the time of the collision. A witness traveling in a car behind Brewster said she was driving about 30 miles per hour when she saw Brewster drive into the back of the van.
“He saw it at the last minute, but it was too late,” Labombarde said, adding that there were about 20 feet of skid marks at the scene.
Waldoboro EMS transported Brewster to Miles Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to Chief Labombarde. There were no other injuries as a result of the accident, he said.
Traffic on Rt. 1 was stopped for emergency personnel. Waldoboro Police and emergency personnel on scene asked motorists to turn around, after which they closed off the area to traffic. Traffic was re-routed at the intersection of Rt. 1 and Rt. 235, closing off the scene from approximately 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Chief Labombarde said he notified the next of kin in Connecticut.
“They said he was a nice guy, and that he loved his motorcycle,” Labombarde said.
