A New Jersey man remains in critical condition after his motorcycle crossed the centerline of Bath Road (Route 1) in Wiscasset and was hit by a car Saturday, Aug. 16.
Andrei Dambuleff, of Frenchtown, N.J., was driving a 1975 BMW motorcycle south on Bath Road at about 8:30 a.m. Paul Wells, 29, of Dresden, was driving a 2003 Hyundai Accent north on Bath Road.
“Witnesses indicate that the motorcycle went over the centerline and struck the Hyundai, which was in its own lane of travel,” according to a Wiscasset Police Department press release.
A LifeFlight helicopter transported Dambuleff to Central Maine Medical Center. He remains in critical condition as of Monday afternoon. Wells was transported to the Miles campus of LincolnHealth in Damariscotta, where he was treated and released.
The accident occurred near Birch Point Road. Authorities closed the road and diverted traffic onto Old Bath Road for about two hours.
Wiscasset Police Officer Robert McFetridge responded to the accident along with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the Wiscasset Ambulance Service, and the Wiscasset Fire Department.
Sgt. Jason Nein, of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, is conducting a crash reconstruction.
The accident was one of three on Bath Road Saturday.
The second accident occurred in the area of Beechnut Hill Road at about 12:55 p.m.
Jean McGinn, 66, of North Yarmouth, was driving a 2005 Honda CRV north on Bath Road. David Finch, 25, of Bangor, was driving a 2011 Toyota Corolla north on Bath Road.
McGinn had to slow down for traffic. Finch did not see the Honda stop and rear-ended it. Neither driver was injured. McFetridge responded to the accident.
The third accident occurred near the south entrance to Old Bath Road at about 3:50 p.m.
Mark Barter, 54, of Boothbay, was driving a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Bath Road. Caryl Tardiff, 64, of South Portland, was driving a 2001 Lexus south on Bath Road.
Barter attempted to turn left onto Old Bath Road. Tardiff was unable to stop and the vehicles collided. Barter was at fault for failure to yield the right-of-way to the Lexus, according to the press release.
Barter was transported to Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.
Tardiff and a passenger, Michael Tardiff, 65, of South Portland, were transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland. Caryl Tardiff was in satisfactory condition Monday afternoon.
McFetridge responded to the accident.
The accidents prompted Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline to issue a warning to motorists.
“Two of these crashes could have been avoided had the operators been paying attention,” Cline said in the press release.
Traffic volume is high on Bath Road this time of year, Cline said. “Please pay attention to your surroundings and be patient with delays,” he said.
