Corina Durkee, who has been charged with a series of crimes including murder in connection with an April 19 attack in Waldoboro, will undergo a psychological evaluation on Dec. 31 as part of the process of her defense.
Durkee, who is being held at Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, has been charged one count each for knowing and intentional murder, aggravated attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and burglary. Her case is currently joined with defendant Earl Bieler, who has been accused of the same crimes in connection to the murder of 19 year-old Rachel Grindal and attempted murder of Tracy Nield outside of Nield’s home on Controversy Lane in Waldoboro.
Attorney Phillip Cohen, who is acting legal counsel for Durkee, requested funds from the court on Oct. 8 to cover costs for the services of Dr. John Lorenz to evaluate her mental health, according to court documents. The initial fee of $4000 will cover interviews with Durkee, psychological testing, a review of the discovery and consultation with Cohen.
Due to the seriousness of the allegations the state recommended Durkee be examined by a psychologist and psychiatrist. Court documents state Durkee is scheduled for an examination on Dec. 31 at 8:30 a.m. at the jail. Dr. Kathryn Thomas is the named examiner for the State Forensic Service, who will determine Durkee’s competency to proceed and her mental state at the time of the alleged crimes.
The trial for both Durkee and Bieler has been tentatively scheduled for the weeks of May 10-14 and May 17- 21.
