Wiscasset has a new employee at the town office. Ellin Jasmin, of Bowdoin, was hired last month to replace the retiring Becky Applin. A native Mainer, Jasmin is a former teacher, missionary, and bank employee who now works in accounts payable for the town.
Before marrying her husband Guy, in 1984, Jasmin was a teacher in a mission school in Brazil. She was part of the New Tribes Mission, an international theologically evangelical Christian mission.
While in Brazil she taught third and fourth graders everything but science and math. She also taught high school students physical education. After a one year assignment in Brazil, she was assigned by the New Tribes Medical Center in Missouri where she worked for two years.
Although she was born in Maine, Jasmin grew up in Florida. Her parents moved south to get away from the winter months. She came to a wedding in Maine in the early 1980s and met Guy Jasmin. Soon after they were married and she moved back to Maine.
Today Guy is a designer at Bath Iron Works, For a few years, before she became a mother, Ellin worked and substituted in Bath and Brunswick schools, as well as at Bath Iron Works. The couple had two sons, which Jasmin homeschooled until they become sophomores
At that point Jasmin decided to pursue an associate’s degree in business administration and management. She also has a bachelor’s degree in international cultural studies.
Her recent employment was with the Bank of Maine, working in the towns of Topsham, Bath, and Richmond.
She said she is very pleased to have been hired by the town, and looks forward to meeting and serving the people of Wiscasset.
