RSU 2 has a new superintendent, announced March 23. He’s California native Virgel Hammonds who begins July 1, and replaces current superintendent Donald Siviski who steps down at the end of the current school year.
During the selection process, three candidates were recommended to the RSU 2 School Board and the board conducted site visits, and following full board interviews, Hammond was elected on Wednesday.
Siviski said Hammonds accepted a three-year contract for $102,000 per year.
In 2002, Siviski became superintendent of SAD 16 (Hallowell and Farmingdale) and during consolidation in 2009, Dresden, Monmouth and Richmond were added to comprise RSU 2.
The departing Siviski has been in education for 39 years, including more than a decade as superintendent.
Siviski recently accepted a job with the Maine Dept. of Education as deputy commissioner superintendent of instruction, and will divide his duties between RSU 2 and the DOE until June 30.
