Snow has taken another building, as a barn on Cowshit Corner in North Newcastle has partially collapsed.
“It actually happened between two to three weeks ago,” Larry Russell said. “The packed snow just weighed too much.” Russell owns Dyer’s Valley Farm, the dairy farm that includes the barn.
The barn was built in 1966 and was where workhands would milk cows. Its most recent use was housing young livestock, according to Russell.
The partial collapse means the stock can still make some use of it.
“It didn’t completely fall,” Russell said. “They can still get in and out of most of it.”
Russell hasn’t decided the next step for the farm.
“I called the insurance company, and it turns out I only had coverage for snow load on one of my barns,” he said. “The barn that collapsed isn’t the barn that was covered.”
Russell said he will look into options for the barn, but does not have a timeline yet.
