Newcastle will hold a special town meeting to balance the secondary education budget at the town office at 7 p.m., Monday, July 14.
The Newcastle Board of Selectmen held an emergency meeting June 30 to schedule the special town meeting.
Newcastle needs to balance a $94,851 deficit in the regular instruction category with a transfer of surplus from other budget categories, according to Central Lincoln County School System Business Manager Kati Hunt.
“The town of Newcastle experienced an unanticipated increase of nine students through the year,” Hunt said. “We’re requesting a town meeting to allow us to transfer funds from other categories to cover this expense.”
The amount necessary to balance the regular education budget category exceeds the 5 percent school committees can transfer from a single category. Only Newcastle voters have the authority to transfer more money.
