A Newcastle man faces charges punishable by up to 30 years in prison for allegedly trafficking in the prescription narcotic Suboxone at his Academy Hill Road apartment this spring.
A Lincoln County grand jury indicted Adam Oliveri, 36, on two counts of aggravated trafficking of a schedule W drug, a class A crime.
Oliveri was arrested after allegedly selling Suboxone to undercover officers, according to Jim Pease, of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. The date of his arrest was not available.
“Oliveri was charged with aggravated trafficking because he was selling the drugs within 1,000 feet of Lincoln Academy,” Pease said.
Suboxone is the trademark for a medication that contains the active ingredient buprenorphine hydrochloride, an opioid that reduces the symptoms of opiate dependence, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Opiate addicts take Suboxone to ease the symptoms of withdrawal, although Suboxone itself can cause dependence and is subject to abuse.
If convicted of aggravated trafficking, Oliveri could get a minimum of four years’ incarceration, according to Pease.
