Speed and alcohol may have contributed to a motorcycle accident in Newcastle that sent two people to the hospital the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 7, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Larry Moulton, 48, of Searsmont, was driving his 2016 Harley-Davidson motorcycle north on Academy Hill Road with passenger Kristi Brown, 47, of Belfast, according to LCSO Lt. Rand Maker.
Moulton attempted to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of Academy Hill Road and Pond Road, however, he was driving “too fast,” Maker said.
Moulton braked hard, causing the brakes to lock and the motorcycle to skid “50 feet or so,” Maker said. Both Moulton and Brown were ejected onto Pond Road.
Neither Moulton nor Brown was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Speed and alcohol are believed to have contributed to the accident, which remains under investigation, Maker said.
The Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service transported Moulton and Brown to LincolnHealth’s Miles Campus in Damariscotta, Maker said. Moulton had a head injury and Brown had facial and lower back injuries.
Both Moulton and Brown were transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to Miles personnel. As of Tuesday, Aug. 9, Moulton remains at Maine Medical in fair condition.
LCSO Deputy 1st Class Mark Bridgham is the investigating officer. The Newcastle Fire Department provided traffic control.
