The Newcastle Board of Selectmen discussed a “tentative” schedule for Newcastle’s annual election and town meeting at its Feb. 28 meeting.
As discussed, municipal elections would take place Fri., June 10 at the community meeting room in the Newcastle fire station on the River Road.
Residents will elect two selectmen and a school committee member. The terms of selectmen Ellen Dickens and Lee Straw expire this year, as does the term of Great Salt Bay School Committee member Raoul Nelson.
Hopefuls for the positions can take out nomination papers at the town office beginning Friday, March 18.
The annual town meeting would follow on Mon., June 13 at the Lincoln Academy gymnasium.
A series of weekly budget hearings will take place throughout the month of April, Newcastle Town Administrator Ron Grenier said.
The selectmen will affirm or alter the dates and times at their next regular meeting, Mon., March 14.
Contractors will bid on a project to reclaim and reconstruct 3750 linear feet of asphalt roadway, resurface the road and improve drainage.
The town will advertise a request for proposals in the coming weeks and hold a pre-bid meeting for contractors at the town office Thurs., March 17. Bids are due Wed., April 6.
Reynolds plans to review the bids and make a recommendation to the selectmen at their Mon., April 11 meeting, he said. If the selectmen accept the bid, construction will begin as soon as possible thereafter.
Although the schedule depends on “Mother Nature,” in the “worst case,” contractors should begin construction in May and finish the eight-week project in July, Reynolds said March 1.
The selectmen didn’t take official action, but the committee will appear on the agenda for the March 14 meeting.
In other business, the selectmen met with the town’s attorney, Peter Drum, in an executive session to discuss potential litigation.
