A passenger train will arrive at the Newcastle station at 12:15 p.m., Friday, July 4. The train whistle will herald the return of passenger rail to Newcastle after a half-
century’s absence.
Trains will arrive in Newcastle at 12:15 p.m., 1:50 p.m., and 4:20 p.m., and a trolley will meet the trains to provide free transportation through the Twin Villages. Riders can
also take the trolley to the Boothbay region for $5 round trip.
The trolley provides free rides for all – not just train passengers – and will travel a continuous loop of the Twin Villages, except during its twice-daily trips to Boothbay and
Boothbay Harbor.
Train and trolley service will continue Friday through Sunday through Oct. 5. For a full train schedule and rates, visit http://www.maineeasternrailroad.com.
The Newcastle depot is ready for passengers, thanks to the hard work of many in the community. Lincoln Academy seniors painted the depot and the Damariscotta-Newcastle public
works staff has provided labor for grounds work and various projects.
The station features a platform on loan from the town of Wiscasset and a new ramp from Maine Eastern Railroad.
Atlantic Tent Company, of Damariscotta, will provide a tent at a greatly reduced rate. Country Coach Charters LLC, of Nobleboro, will operate the trolley.
The Newcastle Depot Committee organized these efforts and raised the startup money for the trolley service.
