A motorist from Waldoboro was transported to the hospital after his truck went off the road in Newcastle late Friday afternoon.
Newcastle firefighters responded to a 4:27 p.m. call of a vehicle fire on the Lewis Hill Road in Newcastle, where they found the driver, Anthony Ezzillo, 59, of Waldoboro, stuck in the ditch.
Ezzillo, was suffering from the symptoms of a medical condition and veered off the road in his green 1999 Ford Ranger pickup, according to Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jason Nein.
Nein said Ezzillo tried to back his truck out of the ditch, spinning his tires, and caused some of the underbrush to burn. A local firefighter noted there was a lot of smoke at the time of the call.
The Central Lincoln County Ambulance Service transported Ezzillo to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta. They were assisted at the scene by the Newcastle Fire Dept. and Sgt. Nein.
“He’s just not feeling well,” Nein said, adding that Ezzillo had not sustained any injuries as a result of the accident. “We just want to make sure he’s okay.”
Nein also said it didn’t look like the truck sustained much damage from sliding off the road. Traffic onto the road was blocked for about an hour, without any further incidents.
