Firefighters have contained a structure fire off Crummett Mountain Rd. in Somerville. At one time the three story structure was fully involved.
The Lincoln County News reporter Greg Latimer at the scene reports Crummett Mountain Road is a dirt road and difficult for the firefighting vehicles to negotiate. Firefighters have also battled to maintain water flow to the scene. Additionally, the structure “isn’t an old barn, but a new modern structure,” said Latimer.
According to Latimer, witnesses said a fuel tank in the dwelling exploded, but officials have not confirmed that information.
Neighbors reported seeing a flash of lightning, followed immediately by three loud booms, just before the fire was reported, Latimer said. However, none of the witnesses could confirm lightning struck the building.
According to one neighbor, Rita Casey, “The lightning strike was so close you could reach out and touch it.”
According to Latimer, in addition to Somerville; Whitefield, Windsor and Jefferson Fire Departments also provided mutual aid support at the scene. Waldoboro firefighters provided station coverage for Jefferson.
