The Maine Department of Transportation began work to replace the “wearing surface” of the Damariscotta-Newcastle bridge Sunday, April 16.
The contractor, Wyman & Simpson Inc., of Richmond, will work on the bridge Sunday-Thursday between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., according to an email from Candace Thompson, resident inspector with the DOT’s Bridge Program, to the towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle.
As part of its contract, Wyman & Simpson has the option to work Saturday night through Monday morning twice during the duration of the project. According to Thompson’s email, the crew does not anticipate using that option.
The work includes repairing the deck, or surface, of the bridge; paving; and other maintenance, according to the email.
Crews will keep one lane open to alternating traffic from either side of the bridge during working hours.
The DOT will advertise any changes to the schedule on traffic signs and on its website. The project is scheduled to be completed by Friday, May 26.
