A student who started a small fire at Jefferson Village School earlier this month has been disciplined and will be required to make use of support services, but no criminal charges are pending, according to officials.
JVS Principal Peter Gallace said a student reported black marks on the wall of a bathroom in the building on either June 10 or 11 that were found to have been caused by an earlier fire.
“A student said [they] found a lighter and it burned a little bit of toilet paper, and that got on the wall a little bit,” Gallace said.
The fire was not burning at the time staff were notified, he said.
“It wasn’t going at all, it just left the black marks,” Gallace said. “I don’t know how the student necessarily put it out.”
Gallace reported the fire to police, and eventually the Office of the State Fire Marshal became involved.
Lincoln County Sheriff’s Lt. Rand Maker confirmed the sheriff’s office was involved.
“We investigated a criminal mischief at the Jefferson school,” Maker said. “There’s no charges right now pending from that investigation.”
The student has been subject to disciplinary action through the school, Gallace said, and will be required to make use of other support services to help ensure the safety of the school.
A call to the Office of the State Fire Marshal was not immediately returned.
