A former Newcastle man imprisoned for the 2007 murders of his ex-girlfriend and father will not receive a new trial.
Superior Court Justice Michaela Murphy ruled against John A. Okie’s petition for post-conviction review Nov. 21, according to the Kennebec Journal.
The petition claimed that Peter DeTroy, Okie’s defense attorney, failed to provide an adequate defense at his December 2008 jury trial.
Okie murdered Alexandra “Aleigh” Mills, 19, in Wayne July 10, 2007 and John S. Okie Sr., 59, in Newcastle July 16, 2007, according to The Lincoln County News archives. He beat Mills to death and stabbed his father.
Okie pleaded not criminally responsible by reason of mental disease or defect at trial, but the jury found him guilty. He was sentenced to consecutive 30-year prison terms.
Okie appealed his convictions and his sentence to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. The court unanimously rejected the appeals in February 2010.
Okie, now 27, is incarcerated at the Maine State Prison in Warren, according to the Maine Department of Corrections. His earliest possible release date is listed as Aug. 20, 2062.
