A 9-year-old Nobleboro boy held a yard sale Saturday, Sept. 23 to lend a hand to families and individuals whose lives have been turned upside down by recent hurricanes.
Gage Hopkins, with his mother, Elisha Hopkins, hosted the yard sale at Hatch Well Drillers, on the corner of East Pond Road and Route 1 in Nobleboro.
A fourth-grader at Bristol Consolidated School, Gage said he was inspired to host the yard sale after seeing photos and videos of hurricane damage in class.
“I felt really bad for the people and wanted to help because they lost everything,” he said.
He brought his old toys to the yard sale and encouraged family and friends to add items they were no longer using.
The yard sale ran from 8 a.m to 2 p.m., and Gage said setup started bright and early.
“When we got here it was basically dark out,” he said.
Gage said he was impressed with how quickly the yard sale started to bring in money, and it wasn’t long before they made $100.
According to Hopkins, Gage raised $634 through the yard sale. Hopkins said Gage was very happy with the yard sale’s results and thought the event would bring in $70-$100 when he first had the idea.
Gage plans to give the money to The First Baptist Church of Nobleboro, which is also raising money for hurricane relief.
