Charles A. Hayes, of Nobleboro, pleaded guilty, Oct. 1, to the felony charges of Class B aggravated assault and Class C assault against a victim under the age of six.
The victim was Hayes’ 1-month-old son.
According to the state, the child’s mother contacted authorities when she noticed bruises after picking up the boy after several days in the care of his father. A check-up revealed injuries including fractures. Hayes, in an interview with a Maine State Police detective, admitted to squeezing his son to get him to stop crying and other behavior that might have caused injury.
Judge Andrew Horton sentenced Hayes to concurrent sentences of eight years in prison with all but 18 months suspended, three years of probation for the aggravated assault charge and 18 months for the assault.
Hayes’ bail agreement will allow him to have contact with his son under the supervision of the Department of Health and Human Services.
