The Nobleboro sand and salt shed collapsed around 5 p.m. Feb. 7.
No one was injured and no equipment was damaged, but the cost to rebuild the structure is estimated to be $150,000 to $200,000, said Dick Spear, Chairman of the Nobleboro Board of Selectmen just after the collapse.
On Feb. 6, one cement wall of the shed, located behind the Nobleboro Town Office on Rte. 1, cracked under the weight of snow and ice on the roof. At the time, the damage didn’t seem serious, and crews planned to clear off the roof and pile earth against the cracked wall to support it until spring, Spear said before the building’s collapse.
While they were clearing the roof, the cracked wall gave way, and the structure fell, Spear said.
For now, crews will clear the debris and cover the sand and salt with tarps.
“We’ll be all set for this year,” Spear said.
Just after the collapse, Spear said part of the cost to rebuild the sand/salt shed will be requested at this year’s town meeting, with the rest to be borrowed.
“There’s still a lot we need to figure out,” Spear said. He was unsure what insurance coverage the town has for the shed and how much of the building will need to be replaced.
