The Nobleboro sand and salt shed collapsed under the weight of snow and ice around 5 p.m. Feb. 7.
No one was injured and no equipment was damaged, but according to Dick Spear, Chairman of the Nobleboro Board of Selectmen, an initial, rough estimate of the cost to rebuild the structure is $150,000 to $200,000.
On Feb. 6, one cement wall of the shed, located behind the Nobleboro Town Office on Rt. 1, cracked under the weight of snow and ice on the roof. At the time, the damage didn’t seem serious, and crews planned to clear off the roof and pile earth against the cracked wall to support it until spring, Spear said before the building’s collapse.
While they were clearing the roof, the cracked wall gave way, and the structure fell, Spear said. For now, crews will clear the debris and cover the sand and salt with tarps.
“We’ll be all set for this year,” Spear said.
Just after the collapse, Spear said part of the cost to rebuild the sand and salt shed will be requested at this year’s town meeting, with the rest to be borrowed.
“There’s still a lot we need to figure out,” Spear said.
The town has insurance on the building through Maine Municipal Association, but it’s unclear at this point how much the town will receive, Spear said. Insurance adjusters are expected to tour the building on Feb. 9.
