The Nobleboro Board of Selectmen awarded the town’s sand contract to Nathan Northrup, of Jefferson, for $8.95 per yard.
The town opened bids for the sand on Sept. 14. This marked the second time this year the town has awarded a sand bid. The first was to Bill Dion, of Nobleboro, for $10 per yard. Dion was the only bidder the first the time the sand went out to bid.
However, Dion refused to sign the town’s sand contract, claiming that unfair terms were added to the contract after he was awarded the bid.
The town put the sand out to bid a second time; this time selectmen contacted potential bidders directly in addition to advertising the bid in The Lincoln County News. Dion did not place a bid in the second round of bidding.
The town received three bids, ranging from Northrup’s bid of $8.95 to a high bid of $14.25.
The same contract was presented to Northrup as was offered to Dion, said Dick Spear, Chairman of the Nobleboro Board of Selectmen.
Northrup signed the contract Sept. 20, Town Clerk Mary Ellen Anderson said.
The town will pay $8.95 per yard for 2500 yards of sand. If more sand is needed after Jan. 1, the sand will cost $9.95, according to Northrup’s bid.
