Almost as soon as heavy, wet snowfall began to fall in Lincoln County, motorists began to slide out of control on area roads. They slid off the road, or into each other, or backwards on a steep incline.
Despite the number of traffic incidents, no major accidents or injuries have been reported at the time of this posting.
The timing and type of this event created a “perfect storm” for traffic incidents, with some motorists attempting to reach Thanksgiving destinations and others just trying to make it home from work, all while wet snowfall covered the roads.
Some area businesses and public buildings closed or planned to close early in an effort to keep their employees and customers off the hazardous roads. The Waldoboro Public Library, Rising Tide Community Market, and the Boothbay YMCA were among those announcing early closure times due to the storm, according to reports.
Both the Maine State Police and the National Weather Service are urging motorists traveling on Wednesday to exercise caution and make every effort to reach their destination before nightfall on Wednesday.
The first power outage in Lincoln County was reported in the 2:28 p.m. bulletin from Central Maine Power. That outage was on Chatfield Place in Bristol, according to CMP. Neighboring Sagadahoc County was already reporting over 1000 outages at that time, according to CMP.
The Lincoln County News website will continue to follow the progress of this event and will post any additional information here as soon as it is obtained.
