The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch well in advance of a storm system forecast to arrive in Lincoln County during the mid-day hours of Tuesday, bringing heavy snowfall and high winds continuing through Wednesday.
The storm system will develop south and east of Maine late Monday into Tuesday as two robust weather systems, one carrying moisture from the south and the other bringing cold temps from the north, collide in the mid-Atlantic and bring a significant northeasterly storm to Lincoln County, according to forecasters.
Early estimates are for over 12 inches of snowfall on Tuesday and another several inches on Wednesday. High winds will also be a factor, with sustained northeasterly winds in the 15 to 25 mph range and gusts up to 40 mph, according to the NWS.
The heaviest snowfall and highest winds are presently forecast to begin Tuesday afternoon and continue into the night, making travel particularly treacherous for any evening commuters, according to forecasters.
The winter storm watch (which will likely be upgraded to a winter storm warning as the system draws closer) is presently in effect from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon.
The Lincoln County News will update this post.
