The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch in advance of a nor’easter forecast to bring “a significant amount” of snow to Lincoln County over New Year’s weekend.
Snowfall is expected to begin Fri. afternoon and then continue – sometimes light, sometimes heavy – all the way through Mon., according to the NWS.
The heaviest snowfall is expected for Fri. afternoon through Sat. night, according to the current NWS forecast.
However, that forecast is still subject to a number of variables. The storm’s formation depends on 3 low fronts, one from the northwest, one from the southwest, and another in the mid-Atlantic to feed their energy into a new low front expected to develop off Cape Cod by Fri. morning.
The newly formed low front is then expected to chug northeast and then “slide” back into the Gulf of Maine, where it will take up residence for the weekend, and bring us a long term of snowfall, according to forecasters.
Should any of this multitude of factors fall out of step with the forecast model, then we could see far less snow, or perhaps far more. So, this is a good storm to keep an eye on over the next day or so. The most significant factor would be if the storm continued it’s northeasterly track out to sea, and not take up residence in the Gulf.
The NWS bulletin states that over 6 inches of snowfall can be expected from Fri. into Sat., and no forecast for total snowfall is mentioned. Should the storm develop as forecast, most of the weather would move out by Sun. night, leaving some snow showers in the forecast for Mon., according to the NWS. The Winter Storm Watch is in effect until Sun. afternoon, at this time. High winds are also a possibility on Sat. and Sun., according to the NWS.
The Lincoln County News website will continue to follow the progress of this event and post any additional information here as it becomes available.
