The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded a Blizzard Watch issued Christmas Day to a Blizzard Warning issued Sunday morning.
According to the NWS, a Blizzard Warning means that, “Severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong wind and poor visibility are likely… This will lead to whiteout conditions… Do not travel… If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.”
For more information on the storm and the wind and snowfall amounts it is forecast to bring, see the story “NWS Warns of Blizzard Conditions for Sun. Night – ’12 Inches or More’ of Snowfall Forecast by Mon. Afternoon” posted December 25.
The Blizzard Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Sunday through 5 p.m. Monday.
While the first wind-blown snowflakes aren’t expected until later this evening, the storm is already having an effect on points south, affecting many airline travelers. Numerous flights were either cancelled or delayed at the Portland Jetport (PWM) at the time of this posting. Those expecting arriving travelers, or planning on airline travel, may want to check the PWM arrival and departures webpage at http://www.portlandjetport.org/arrivals_departures.
The Lincoln County News website will continue to monitor the progress of this event and post any additional information here as soon as it becomes available.
