The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a somewhat tardy Winter Weather Advisory late Wednesday night forecasting continued snowfall through Thursday morning. Also issued was a Special Weather Statement that warns of dangerous travel conditions due to snow-covered roads that should continue through the morning commute.
The continuous snowfall through the day on Wednesday appeared to catch some forecasters by surprise, while temps hovering near the freezing mark surprised many motorists with a slick coat of slush on the roads.
Another surprise is the location of the storm system bringing this weather to Lincoln County. The area of low pressure was reported almost 1000 miles due east of the Maine coast at the time of this posting. However, a counterclockwise weather flow that has affected the region for some weeks effectively hauled the snowfall right out of the North Atlantic and back here to Lincoln County.
While Thursday morning will remain challenging for travelers, the weather is expected to clear in the afternoon, and remain that way through Christmas.
