Lincoln Academy graduate and Bentley University senior Malcolm Oliver has won the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association championship held Oct. 25-26 for the second time.
Oliver shot a sizzling five-under 67 at the Captains Course to finish the two-day, 184-player event with a two-under 142. That was four strokes better than overall runner-up Kevin Duncan (Fairfield) and gave him a winning margin of six in the Division II championships.
Oliver, who last year became Bentley’s first-ever New England champion, became the first Falcon to turn in a five-under score since Bob Rainville did so in the 1997 ECAC Division II Championships.
For the tournament, Oliver had 20 pars and nine birdies with averages of 2.89 on the par threes, an even 4.0 on the par fours, and 4.89 on the par fives. The tournament championship was Oliver’s third of the fall season and school-record fifth career collegiate win.
Oliver was named a co-recipient of the 2015 Guy Tedesco Award, along with Southern New Hampshire’s Jake Nutter. This award is given annually to the outstanding New England golfer who displayed the qualities Tedesco was noted for: unselfish leadership, outstanding talent, love of golf, and willingness to promote positive aspects of golf to others.
Bentley finished second of nine in the Division II standings and third overall in a field of 38.
After leading Bentley University to the championship of the Franklin Pierce Division II Fall Invitational, senior Malcolm Oliver, or Damariscotta, was recognized with major weekly awards by the Northeast-10 Conference.
Oliver, a Lincoln Academy alumnus was named the NE-10 Men’s Golfer of the Week for the second time this season, and fifth time in his career.
Oliver fired a 74-71-145 to capture the tournament by two strokes. It was his fourth career tournament victory, a new program record.
Oliver is in the midst of an outstanding fall season with a stroke average of 73.5 and six straight rounds with 74 or better.
