A Department of Transportation project to pave 19.6 miles of Route 32 from Route 130 in New Harbor to Route 1 in Waldoboro is underway.
As of Tuesday, July 28, crews had advanced from Route 130 to the Round Pond area. The job started around Friday, July 24 and will likely wrap up around Wednesday, Aug. 5, according to a spokesman for contractor Pike Industries Inc.
The Route 32 work is part of a larger “light capital paving” project encompassing 55.86 miles of road in 11 towns across Kennebec, Knox, and Lincoln counties.
In addition to Bremen, Bristol, and Waldoboro, the project includes work in Chelsea, Jefferson, St. George, Thomaston, Union, Warren, Washington, and Whitefield.
Contractors will pave Cooper Road from Route 17 in Chelsea to Route 126 in Whitefield, Route 126 from Route 32 in Jefferson to Route 220 in Washington, Route 131 from Route 1 in Thomaston to Route 235 in Union, Route 131 from Wallaston Road south for 4.28 miles in St. George, Route 215 from the intersection with Route 32 to the intersection with Route 126 in Jefferson, Route 220 from Route 1 in Waldoboro to Route 17 in Washington, and Village Street in Jefferson, according to a DOT document outlining the project.
The DOT awarded the contract for the work to Pike Industries Inc., of Fairfield, for $1,805,848.50, according to DOT documents. Pike Industries Inc. submitted the lowest of three bids.
Pike Industries Inc. has subcontracted Hagar Enterprises Inc., of Damariscotta, to complete the paving.
Work started on Route 131 around July 15 or 16, according to Justin Brewer, Pike Industries area manager for Maine. Crews moved on to Route 32 around Friday, July 24 and will likely finish that stretch around Wednesday, Aug. 6, depending on the weather.
The crew will then move on to Cooper Road, Brewer said.
