Central Maine Power Company (CMP) reports that high winds associated with a severe winter storm have caused widespread outages throughout its service area. As of 11:30 Friday morning, an estimated 130,000 homes and businesses were without service, with 16,977 of outages in Lincoln County.
There is considerable damage in Lincoln and Sagadahoc Counties in Maine’s Midcoast. The wind damage in southern and coastal areas comes a day after heavy wet snow caused numerous outages in Maine’s western mountains and foothills. The heaviest damage was in York and Cumberland Counties, where wind gusts exceeded 60 mph in coastal areas on Thursday night.
“Our crews are still working to restore power in several inland counties from the heavy snow that fell on Wednesday,” said CMP spokesman John Carroll. “In southern and coastal counties, public safety is our priority after last night’s rain and wind. Crews are working to make sure that downed lines are de-energized and assessing the damage, but power restoration may not start in earnest until late in the day.”
The company is warning that it will be several days before it can restore service in all areas.
