The owners of the Newcastle Publick House are pleased to announce their recent acquisition of South Bristol’s popular waterfront eatery Coveside Marina and Restaurant.
For Maine natives and Publick House owners Alex and Rachel Nevens, the opportunity is a lifelong dream come true.
“We’ve had our eye on the Coveside for quite some time and are thrilled to have an opportunity to expand our efforts into an iconic Lincoln County establishment with a great tradition,” said Rachel Nevens.
The pair will assume control from Lurie Sprague-Palino, who is leaving to focus on her efforts on Seacoast Catering and Lobster Bakes. While no major changes are planned as of yet, Chef Alex Nevens said he will place an emphasis on high quality, local seafood and a rededication to the food.
“It will not be the Publick House South but we will continue to use as much locally sourced food as possible and also provide the high level of service which people have come to expect from the Publick House in Newcastle,” said Nevens. “It’s a great chance to expand our business and also honor the unique role the Coveside plays for locals and the many summer visitors who come to South Bristol.”
In addition to a revamped menu, the Nevens’ plans include live acoustic music, Maine craft beers, and space for private parties. With a sweeping view of Christmas Cove, the Coveside offers an authentic Maine experience, said Alex Nevens -without the traffic or crowds. In 2010, Esquire Magazine placed the Coveside Marina on their list of 100 best bars in America.
Ever since Captain John Smith first dropped anchor on Christmas day in 1614, the harbor has been a favorite landing spot for mariners seeking protection for their vessels. Today Coveside Marina offers 14 moorings in addition to the adjoining restaurant.
The Nevens’ plan to stick to tradition with a May opening but hope the weather cooperates in order to accommodate functions earlier in the spring.
“We can finally say we have a summer place in South Bristol,” said Alex Nevens. “Though it may be hard to enjoy the view from the kitchen it’s an exciting time for us and we hope people will continue to make the Coveside a destination.”
