A small Damariscotta company is making a large impact on carbon emissions reduction in Maine.
Green Energy Products Inc. founded in 2008 distributes the Fitch Fuel Catalyst, which reduces heating oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions in boilers and furnaces. Green Energy Products guarantees the catalyst will reduce heating oil use a minimum of 10 percent.
After leaving the refinery, during shipping and storage, all fuels begin to degrade. When heating oil flows through the Fitch Fuel Catalyst, prior to entering the oil burner, it is re-refined causing it to burn more completely, producing a hotter flame and fewer emissions.
This enables the nozzle size in the burner to be reduced, requiring less oil to obtain the same amount of heat. Because the savings is realized through nozzle reduction, the actual savings is determined at the time of installation; no need to measure over a period of time.
Further savings will come from the reduction of soot and carbon buildup, maximizing heat transfer and burner efficiency.
In addition to reducing heating costs, the Fitch Fuel Catalyst will also reduce carbon emissions substantially. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one gallon of burned heating oil emits 22.3 lbs. of Carbon Dioxide into the air. Reducing annual heating oil use by 100 gallons will reduce CO2 emissions by 2240 lbs.
To date, more than 500 Fitch Fuel Catalysts have been installed in Maine. In addition to the more than 200 units installed on residential oil burners, other installations include banks, schools, churches, retail businesses, newspapers, apartment buildings and town facilities.
The HO-5-UL unit, guaranteed for 10 years, sells for $499. It is recommended for any residential or commercial oil burner up to 5 gallons per hour. Larger sizes are available. The price does not include installation, which is done by a licensed oil burner technician.
Even though the price of heating oil has increased substantially this year, the installation of the Fitch Fuel Catalyst will lower heating costs by reducing oil use.
