A number of Lincoln County residents reported that they felt an earthquake at approximately 8 p.m. on Tues., March 12, but those reports were not confirmed by official sources. Residents in Waldoboro, Damariscotta Mills, Boothbay Harbor and East Boothbay reported a “very subtle rumbling” or a “a loud bang” or “a sound like thunder”. Those reports were received via The Lincoln County News Facebook page.
An officer at the Lincoln County Communications Center said that no reports had been received there as of 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
A check of the US Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards website, that records seismic events around the world, indicated no earthquakes have been monitored in the area. While the USGS site normally records earthquakes exceeding 2.5 on the Richter scale, it also has an option for all quakes recorded.
Another check on the New England Real Time Earthquake Monitor website run by the Weston Observatory at Boston College indicated no activity as well. That website records earthquakes that exceed a magnitude of 1 on the Richter scale.
